MITIGATION TRAINING EVENT FOR PAKISTANI
SCIENTISTS.

Dr
Anwar Nasim, Dr Erum Khan, Dr Shamsul Arfen Qasmi, Dr Altaf Ahmad, Ms
Shahida M Qureshi and Ms Maqboola K Dojki attended Biosafety and
Biosecurity Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation Training Event for
Pakistani Bio-Scientists held in Dubai from Jan 12-14 2010, by BEP in
collaboration with Sandia Labs.
Keeping in view the increasing threats with regard to BWC and recent
advances in Biosafety and Biorisk assessment the training for the
related Bioscientists who are working with Biological agents,
hazardous for the individuals and the community was organized by
Biosecurity Engagement Program, Dept of State, USA.
This event was organized in Dubai, United Arab Emirates w.e.f 12-14
January 2010, the theme of this workshop was to bring awareness among
the Bioscientists and simultaneously train the trainer to propagate
the message amongst the persons who are working with these dangerous
goods.
The
workshop started with Risk Assessment Training and it was conducted by
Susan Caskey from Sandia Labs USA.
The
first day of workshop was started with introduction of risk assessment
process and to identify key factors for assessing safety risks, and
how to conduct a Biosafety risk assessment. It was an interactive
session and the participants were encouraged to take part in it
actively and submit their results with regard to risk and
simultaneously Biosecurity risk assessment.
The
second day was allocated to generalize discussion on Biosafety and
Biorisk management, in addition the incidence and danger of spread of
infection with relation to human, animal and zoonotic diseases in
south Asia was discussed in detail by Rob Heckert USA. Introduction of
CEN workshop agreement was elaborated by Susan Caskey and she
emphasized on the importance of this document for Laboratory Biorisk
Management systems which is in the final stages of development. This
document will be approved by European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
and will be an authentic document for this system among the globe.
Post lunch period was allocated to the Pakistan Biorisk Task Force who
deliberated their efforts with regard to promotion and implementation
of Biosafety and Biosecurity in Pakistan and the BEP team from USA
lauded the efforts of this Pakistani task force who is working with
enthusiasm and the will to promote Biosafety and Biosecurity in this
region and their country..
The
last day was reserved for the measures for Biorisk mitigation and the
experts detailed the audience with working with animals in a
laboratory settings and the following points with regard to PPE, MC&A
and BSC’s and Airflow, Physical Security and personnel management
were discussed in an proactive manner. In the end the President and
General Secretary of Pakistan Biological Safety Association thanked
the team from BEP USA for actively disseminating the knowledge and
training the related Pakistani Bioscientists to develop a Biosafe and
Biosecure culture in this part of the globe.
